I will never forget one special night with my husband... we did not have children yet... but had been married for about 6 years... I was just cooking dinner... cleaning up the kitchen... all the normal evening chores... and he was in the living room... he turned off the TV, turned on one of my favorite CDs, James Taylor.... and just came up behind me... turned off dinner... took me in his arms and we danced... in the kitchen... in each others arms... just held each other close... it only lasted for a song or two... but it was such a welcome break to our daily routine driven lives... We now have 2 wonderful children and have been married for almost 15 years... he is a very hardworking man... he is in the Air Force and he sacrifices a lot for our family... I would love to win these flowers for him... just to show him that true love is here... it is not in the material things we don't have... it is in our hearts every day... even when we are apart...

I would love to win flowers, to send to my wife. She means everything to me. I am currently deployed in Afghanistan, and she most certianly deserves a suprise. Thinking about it I try to be as romantic as possibe so there are a few times..The most romantic time would have to be when it was our one year anniversary, and I wanted something really special. I reserved a room in a special quiet place i knew she would enjoy it, where it would be just the two of us...I drove up the day before and set up the room, I placed roses in a path to the diffrent things I set up for her.. as soon as she entered the door I had one that said go to the bedroom and slip into her swim suit and hoop into the heart shaped hot tub, filled with bubble bath, placed on the side was a card and another rose that told her about how i feel about her and how happy i was that she was in my life since it was our one year. Attached to the rose it said please wait and enjoy your bubble bath, Im cooking you dinner..When dinner was done I went to get her and started a nice cozy fire, and placed dinner on the glass dinner table placed infront of the fire place, candles surrounded us as we sat and sipped champage , she got excited to know whatelse was going on, i said before you get to excited lets enjoy dessert, as she ate her chocolate covered strawberries, she looked at me and said wow theres something hard in this one, she pulled it out of her mouth and and put it in to the glass of champage to wash it off.. i took the ring got on one knee and asked to marry me.. She means the world to me and always will.. she deserves a good valentines day.. thank you.. Erik

And I forgot to add that after I moved all my stuff to a nearby vacant apartment, Jude later lugged a 10000 lbs (give or take some) sanding machine, that he rented and paid for, up to my apartment and redid those floors for me.

He's always been my hero, fixing my mistakes.

Jude!

He didn't just leave me a note and some food. It was the timing of it all and the setting that made it romantic.

Here are some relevant details you need to know:

1. I was constantly locking myself out of my apartment. I don't know how a person forgets their keys so easily. Like, how dumb do you have to be? So, Jude had keys to my apartment because I often had to call him to come let me in.

2. I was renovating my apartment. It was a bachelor apartment and I was just so forward-thinking to think I could pull off the carpet and redo the hardwood floors. Well, it started because my cat had torn up the carpet by the door. And when I pulled back the carpet it revealed beautiful hardwood floors from 1904. So, I went gung ho and ripped up all the carpet only to find that as I got further back, some of the wood was water damaged and the rest was painted with three layers of what was probably lead paint. I tediously worked to scrape it off (because I didn't know anything about proper lead paint removal) and all this in a BACHELOR apartment. Which meant that I had to move stuff back and forth. My cat got sick from licking her fur and ingesting lead paint, very likely, so Jude took her in. (He also later drove from Ontario to Alberta, in a 3-day Uhaul trip, with my cat, to bring her to me when we both moved out here at separate times.)

3. I was busy at the time being in school, working part time for a law office, and rehearsing for a city production of West Side Story.

4. That night that he left me the meal, I really didn't feel like going to rehearsal. I was tired. I was depressed. I hadn't had supper.

5. When I came home I found a rhubarb pie on top of my ironing board, yes with my name etched in it. Because if you listen to Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion, you know that one little thing can revive a guy (or girl) and that is a homemade rhubarb pie. Serve it up, nice and hot. Maybe things aren't as bad as you thought. Momma's little baby loves rhubarb, rhubarb... beebopareebob rhubarb pie. And Jude had once sang that song from the radio show while doing a little dance, IN THE GROCERY STORE for me.

SO. This wasn't just any ol' pie. This was a pie to revive a guy (or girl, as the case was). This was a pie with a song and a grocery store dance attached. This was a pie with so much symbolism attached. In fact, rhubarb pie has come to symbolize our marriage and Garrison Keillor who helped bring us together.

6. It wasn't just a note to let me know that there was Haagen-Daz (my favourite ice cream at the time-- now it's a competition between HD and Ben & Jerry's OF COURSE) in the freezer and a homemade pasta meal in the oven. It was a love letter to tell me how dear I am, how special, how he knew I'd get through this tough time.

7. I had no idea that he cleaned up at all. Think about that. That's pretty embarrassing. Because it means that my house was messy enough that I didn't even notice. He also just mentioned that he had done this two other times. What?! We've been married 10 years and he tells me this now. That's hilarious.

<abbr><em><abbr><em>Natashas last blog post..<a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/typepad/1216614478s21580/becoming_something/~3/532059926/im-checking-out-folks.html" rel="nofollow">I'm checking out, folks, after a very, very bad day broke the camel's back.</a></em></abbr></abbr></em>

It was not long after I had met my wife to be that I left a surprise supper at her apartment. My offering was just that as I did not know her well enough to have reliable knowledge as to what would be the best food to woo her with. I was forced to rely on bits of information that she had let fall on those occasions where we had either eaten or shopped together. Aside from a spare key to her apartment I had no real resources aside from a cook book or two and some time squeezed out of a busy legal career. Mid-way through the food prep I distinctly realized that some poor guesses about the menu could be a real set back to our relationship as it could reveal some poor listening or inept cooking. However "faint heart n'er fair lady won". I quietly left her a home baked pie with her name etched on the crust, and a note that informed there was pasta in the oven and Haagen Daz in the freezer. While leaving the food I could not help but notice there were some dishes that needed washing and I took care of that because I cared greatly for her. I wanted her to come home and have a decent meal without tedious chores to ruin her evening . I wanted to create a mood in her home that made her feel that she was not alone in the world, even if she had to dine alone that night.
It worked out well as we have since wed. I still cook pasta, try to keep Haagen Daz in the fridge and do dishes. And Natasha has never made feel alone in the world.
