Wives Give Service

by Cory H. on November 24, 2008

Last week I had a root canal.  Anyone who tells you a root canal doesn’t hurt is a liar.  Let me get that out of the way.  It’s been 3 days and I’m in agony.

My darling wife, however has been unbelievably kind.  She has really gone out of her way to be nice to me and to help me find things to eat that are soft enough to mash with my tongue.  How is it that she can be so kind and considerate, and I am so often a bumbling oaf?

Women give compassion.

Something about being built for childbirth makes women more compassionate.  They talk about their emotions more and they empathize more than men do.  If men cared about other people as much as women do, perhaps there wouldn’t be war.

Women give love.

My wife writes about femininity and love.  She has expressed before that true femininity is strong, powerful, and full of love.  Women are capable of figuring out what people need when they are hurting and then fulfilling that need.  In sports we call these the intangibles.

Women give service.

While I wouldn’t say that my wife’s love language is service, I would say that she has a definite need to take care of me sometimes.  I think we all want to feel needed and appreciated.  My wife loves being able to care for me when I’m really not well.  This weekend was one of those times.  Last night I was feeling guilty about her doing so much for me when she’s so stressed out about college finals and I tried to tell her that I could turn on the computer and watch a movie myself, that she could go take a bath.  It hurt her feelings that I didn’t want her to do things for me.  She really does love me.

I appreciate my wife.  Sometimes I think that know so little of how much she loves me and how she expresses that love.  I am a blessed man.

Thanks Periapex. I've got the bite sensitivity and a little achiness, which has gone down quite a bit. I ate nachos two days after the procedure, so it's probably mostly my fault. I took some prescription pain meds last couple days and now its just irritating.

If it flares up again or doesn't go away soon, I'll contact my dentist about the antibiotics.

The vast majority of root canal procedures leave patients with some bite sensitivity and achiness for about a week afterwards. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory painkillers are usually enough.

Cases that flare up severely after treatment are often cases with preoperative infection. The flareup can be thought of as a secondary infection (not exactly true, but still a good way of viewing the problem). Flare ups like that usually require a dose of antibiotics and stronger painkillers.

Once on the antibiotics, acute, persistent pain (past a week or two), should be checked out -- ideally by an endodontist.

No pain with mine either. Maybe they didn't take out the nerve?

Nice compliments for women Cory but men are really cool too. They are warriors and protectors. They are problem solvers and providers. They reach up high and bend down low. They are strong yet can be very gentle. Men make women feel more beautiful than they probably are just because the men see their beauty inside and out. Men are awesome. I wouldn't trade them for anything!!!

Gonna have to agree with Jia. I had two root canals weeks apart. I have always heard the horror stories and I HATE dentists to begin with. Neither one of mine had any pain. I would rather have a root canal on every tooth then have to sit through a routine cleaning.

You might wanna check into a dentist that was trained in interrogation techniques before dental school.

Cory, being in the dental field as I am and have been for the last 19/20 years, I can honestly tell you that having a root canal should not leave you in agony. Having a root canal (done by a qualified doctor) should have you feeling just fine, and certainly not in any pain whatsoever. I'd be looking for another dentist.

You need to get another dentist.
I have had, unfortunately, two root canals and did not experience pain at all. True!

I think you're just talking about the pain to milk the sympathy from your sweet wife. Nice move!

Your wife is an awesome chica! I completely admire her.
